Arlington County Council took several actions on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at its regular County Council meeting, including approving a use permit for a unified commercial/mixed-use development at 2608 Shirlington Road. This project will consist of a 4-storey building with up to 30 residential units, including reserved affordable housing and a partially underground parking garage.
The county council also presented a draft of its proposed trust policy to the community and heard comments from the public. The board encouraged further dialogue prior to review of the final policy at the July board meeting.
On Tuesday, June 21, 2022, the county council held its recess meeting. Several actions have been taken and reports submitted, including:
- An update from County Executive Mark Schwartz that included an announcement that starting June 22, Arlington County will begin offering Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines to children as young as 6 months old. Vaccines will be given by appointment only, and residents can visit the county’s website for details and information.
- President Katie Cristol announced that Arlington has been named a Platinum-level Walk Friendly Community by the Walk Friendly Communities program, a national recognition program run by the University of North Carolina’s Highway Safety Research Center. Arlington County joins a group of 5 other Platinum level communities.
- The county council also passed a resolution adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Association (IHRA) working definition of anti-Semitism for educational and monitoring purposes in Arlington. The IHRA’s non-legally binding definition has been embraced by communities across the United States and around the world. Establishing this common definition will help law enforcement, human rights officials and victims themselves understand and name these incidents in order to improve reporting and ultimately draw more attention and education to the growing problem of anti-Semitism.
On Thursday, June 23, 2022, Board Chair Katie Cristol will be joined by Board Member Takis Karantonis and Arlington County Deputy Director for Human Rights Gurjit Chima , to celebrate Pride Month and discuss Arlington’s Municipal Equality Index (MEI) score of 100 for the second year in a row. Connect to the Board Wrap-Up podcast via Spotify, Anchor or Apple iTunes to listen.
Council meetings can be viewed in their entirety on the county’s website and on YouTube.
