IGP Professor Recognized Among India’s Top Environmental Scientists
“My research and work are focused on using scientific principles to benefit the common man and on developing roadmaps and policies for the future,” said Dr. Ravindra Khaiwal, professor in the Department of Community Medicine and the School of Public Health, PGI. Dr. Khaiwal has been recognized among India’s top environmental scientists, ranked 11th in India and 3,112 internationally by research.com.
A leading website for providing credible data on scientific achievement since 2014, research.com has released the first edition of its ranking of the world’s top environmental scientists. Inclusion criteria for the Top Scientists Ranking include discipline h-index, publication and citation data collected, proportion of contributions made in a particular discipline, and scientist awards and achievements. Based on an in-depth analysis of 1,66,880 scientists on Google Scholar and Microsoft Academic Graph, over 9,198 profiles were analyzed for the discipline of environmental science.
The impact of Dr. Khaiwal’s research can be seen from his high h-index of 48 and citations above 11,000. Recently, he was also ranked among the top 1% of Indian environmental scientists by Scopus and rankings from Stanford University.
Dr. Khaiwal’s work focuses on understanding air pollution, its sources and exposure in order to minimize adverse effects and facilitate evidence-based policies.

Recently during the pandemic, Dr. Khaiwal led the development of IEC materials to raise awareness and help limit the spread of Covid-19. His comics, “Kids, Vaayu and Corona” and some other materials have been adopted and published by various government departments. He also developed the “Health Adaptation Plan for Air Pollution and Climate Change Diseases”, including the infographic under the National Air Pollution and Climate Change Program, adopted by the Ministry of Health.
“There are a number of projects I’m working on in conjunction with other scientists, including one with an organization in the UK looking at the impact of climate change by 2050, publications on the trend of the rise of heat waves in central India, how to minimize the threat of heat waves, etc.,” said Dr Khaiwal.
He has received several awards and fellowships in the field of environmental health including the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM) Presidential Award 2021.
