Future designers in the spotlight at ATU Donegal – Donegal Daily
Graduates from ATU Donegal’s Design and Creative Media Department were ready to impress at their annual Year-End Graduate Showcase on Thursday 9th June at 6pm.
And impress they did.
This year’s showcase took place at the Letterkenny campus of the Atlantic Technological University (ATU) Donegal and is an historic event as it is the first time in over two years that graduates, staff, employers and guests had the chance to come together in person to celebrate the achievements and success of the Design & Creative Media academic year.
The Graduate Showcase event highlights the pioneering and exciting work created by ATU Donegal students in the fields of Fashion Animation, Graphic & UX Design, Fashion, Film and Cinema. video.
Guests at the showcase were treated to striking presentations of original fashion collections created by Fashion with Promotion’s final year students, these collections focusing on sustainable fashion and circular design. The winners of the 2022 McElhinneys Student Designer of the Year Award were Pascale Nwanko (Level 8) and Maguerita McHugh (Level 7).
Pascale’s Masquerade – Masked Parade Collection painted a theatrical interpretation of the psychic duality of James Stewart’s African Americans in WEB DuBois’ novels. The premise was based on the double consciousness of Pascale’s own childhood.
Maguerita was inspired by her family’s involvement with creativity. Her collection celebrates femininity with beautifully detailed and neatly shaped corsets constructed with fabric dyed with natural dyes, as well as recycled ties, once referred to as a male symbol of power.
Final year graphic design and UX (user experience) students exhibited their diverse body of work encompassing a wide range of multidisciplinary design projects ranging from visual identity, app design, writing/ messaging, design for print, motion graphics, web design and illustration. , icon design and design for social media.
The Showcase opened with a fashion show followed by the “Pop-Up” cinema, where the final work of the animation and film students was screened. Graphic and UX design is displayed on the second floor landing and all student work can be viewed in detail in their studios.
