Furious Icelandic shoppers say they feel ‘ripped off’ by selling 400 items for 1 pence

Several angry Icelandic shoppers have shared how they feel ‘ripped off’ by a 400-item 1p sale which was launched this morning after finding out it only worked online

Furious Icelandic shoppers feel ‘cheated’ by the discount supermarket’s vow to sell 400 products for 1 pence.

Fresh and frozen goods, including burger buns, ice cream cones and soft drinks, are included in the offer launched this morning – but the fine print says they must be ordered online.

To get free delivery, customers have to spend £40, which they say is unfair to those who can’t afford it, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Theresa Maher said: “While a kind gesture, it’s flawed… how many low-income households will spend over £35 not to pay the £4 delivery charge, only to find their penny items mysteriously out of stock and missing from their order?

“But now that they’ve spent over £35 on Icelandic food, they can no longer afford the full price bread, milk, butter etc in their local shop/supermarket.

“It would surely be better as an in-store offering, where at least low-income households can rethink their purchases as they walk around and find that everything they need is out of stock…plus a loaf of bread, 4 pints of milk and butter/margarine is cheaper than the £4 delivery charge!”

Amanda Clapson said: “Well, you have to pay broadband for internet to shop and spend that much on getting ‘free delivery’ to get an item for 3p.”

Debra Banner said: “It’s a scammer, you have to spend at least £25 to get free delivery and then you only get three items on the £1 range and then you have to add more items to your cart to bring the amount to the Minimum Order Value of £25 and not available in store, which I believe is wrong.”

Julie Barber added: “Sorry that’s all wrong, not everyone is shopping online, it’s unfair.”

But not everyone was so critical. Elaine Greenley said: “At least Iceland is thinking about the help it can offer people. There are plenty of free Wi-Fi zones around towns and city centers and there is Wi-Fi at libraries or community centers if you are nearby.”

Glenis Tinton said: “Great for people shopping online???” and Pauline O’Leary said, “Great idea, hope this helps.”

Richard Walker, Managing Director of Iceland, said: “We continue to work hard to ensure that our customers are supported as much as possible as the cost of living continues to rise and we hope that our sale of daily essentials at 3p will help a bit this weekend.

“Our previous sales at Christmas and Easter were very popular and this time we have made the decision to branch out and offer this offer on basic necessities, as well as vegetables, to help our customers through the cost of living crisis.

“We are committed to helping our customers as much as possible during this difficult time and we will continue to do so.”

It comes after the store announced that shoppers battling rising costs can purchase three items for just 3p over the next week.

The supermarket is reducing the price of more than 420 products – but only for online customers.

Grocery store essentials such as milk, bread and butter will be included in the deal – which is part of the payday countdown for millions of workers.

Other items on offer include summer favorites such as hamburger buns, ice cream cones and soft drinks, as well as a selection of fresh, frozen and grocery items.

To get the money, you will need to include three items that are part of the offer in your order on the Iceland website.

Once you reach the checkout step, enter “ICEPENNY” as the promotional code before paying.

The deal will save customers up to 99 pence per product, based on an item originally costing £1.

The special offer will run from June 18 to June 24 at midnight.

The Icelandic deal comes as grocery store analysts have warned prices could rise 15% this summer and leave shoppers skipping meals.

The Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD) said households should pay more for basic necessities, including dairy products, bread and meat, as inflation is expected to reach 11%.

Shopping bills for a typical family of four could rise by up to £40 a month, he warned.
