Fire destroys 12 townhouses in western Ottawa residential complex
OTTAWA – A fire at a residential development near Kanata that sent thick smoke and flames into the sky over the west end destroyed 12 townhouses that were under construction.
Damage is estimated at $ 6 million after the fire at Mattamy Homes’ Connections in Kanata development near the Canadian Tire Center.
The Ottawa fire received several 911 calls at 6:07 p.m. Wednesday, reporting a fire in homes under construction on Culdaff Road near Palladium Drive.
An Ottawa firefighter spokesperson said several callers reported smoke and flames in townhouses under construction, while some callers warned there were propane tanks inside them. houses.
Only the skeletons of the houses were standing before the fire started, with no electricity connected to the building and no windows or doors installed.
“I mean it’s a huge fire, it was just after supper time, around 6 o’clock you could start to hear relentless sirens in this neighborhood, it just wouldn’t stop,” said the ‘CTV Morning Live host Annette Goerner in an interview on CTV News at Six. “Hundreds of curious neighbors began to pour into the streets.”
The development consists of three blocks of 12 townhouses each, for a total of 36 three-story townhouses. Ottawa Fire Public Information Officer Nicholas DeFazio told CTV News Ottawa that when firefighters arrived at the scene, six of the units were completely ablaze and the fire was spreading to another block of six townhouses.
There were 10 fire trucks on the scene early Wednesday evening to tackle the blaze.
âIt’s a major attack from the firefighters trying to get this under control,â Goerner said. “The flames completely engulfed the entire structure.”
DeFazio says firefighters were successful in preventing the blaze from spreading to 24 townhouses. Crews were also able to cool the propane tanks outside the development and keep them from catching fire.
A firefighter was taken care of by paramedics on site for heat exhaustion.
The smoke could be seen as far as Westboro and Barrhaven, and across the river in western Quebec.
The fire was located inside the Connections in Kanata development by Mattamy Homes. It includes townhouses and singles.
